Hypocrisy is “claiming to have moral standards or beliefs to which one’s own behaviour does not conform.”
In fact, the ancient Greek word comes from the word Hypocrisy for a stage actor or one who wears a mask. It is not necessarily the fact that they sin that makes them a hypocrite, it’s the fact that they don’t acknowledge it. They don’t admit that their lives contradict what they say.
Surah Al- Munafiqoon is a Madani Surah with one theme and with one topic.
It is a sickness of the heart that transforms into the attitude and mindset of the Muslim if not treated at the right time.
Al-Hasan Al-Basri said of hypocrisy:
“No one fears it but a believer, and no one feels safe from it but a hypocrite.”
It is a fact that many of the sincerest companions of Prophet Muhammad SAW feared hypocrisy for themselves, and were extremely conscious of their words and actions because of this fear.
The signs of a hypocrite are three, even if he fasts and prays and claims to be a Muslim: when he speaks he lies, when he makes a promise he breaks it, and when he is trusted he is treacherous.”
